Feed Back Attack!

I'm preparing to write an inexpensive e-book tentatively titled "Legends of the Boo Monster." Originally, it was going to just be the true story of my son, his autism, and the unique challenges and wonderment of being the Boo Monster's daddy, but then I got to thinking, and once the smoke cleared, I had an idea. What if I wrote the odd chapters about the one true real life Boo Monster and the even chapters a fairy tale about a fictional Boo Monster and his adventures? I'd really dig some feedback. What say you all?

  1. Write both of them separately, than after each is finished tinker with the possibility.

  2. I'd say you write the entire adventure/story based on the real Boo and in the odd fairytale chapters introduce his alter ego as "Wonder Kid", as only described in the most accurate way, seen through the eyes of his father, who can truly make his voice come to life...The reality should be written b/c it will teach many kids and adults about a topic they don't have an understanding of. Focus on the fact that without acquiring a language - you can be his voice, b/c you have more of a grasp on Boo's language without words through the love and connection of his soul and eyes. could be such a role model for other parents and kids who are dealing with a similar situation in a funny, poignant, meaningful way....

    1. Thanks,my fabulous Jedi Master. You know me well. I think you pretty much nailed my game plan in how I plan to represent the Boo Monster in *both* stories. He will remain the Boo Monster in both portions of the book. His namesake, David "Classic", has rendered a version of the Boo Monster perfect for my imagination's eye. *HUGS*

  3. I'm not sure about writing them separately. You might well find that as you write up Boo Monster's real adventures, these give you brand new ideas for elements of the fairy tale. I would strive for making the fairy tale an organic development from the true story as much as possible. The result would be an elegant and lovely book for all readers. I'm excited for you, Shawn!

    1. Thanks Kate, I was thinking that each "real" chapter will lead into the fairy tale chapter naturally as an accompanying story with the same theme. I'm really excited about it. :-)

  4. I agree with Liz's comment. Your communication with your son will give the story an interesting voice . And, for me, a person that has no idea what it's like, I would like to see a story that appeals to someone who isn't familiar with autism and all it entails.Bringing in an audience that wouldn't normally read books about the subject, would give it an unique approach. And it would also teach dunderheads like me more on the subject. With your talent and way with words, I know it would be entertaining and a great read! (I just wonder if using the title "Boo Monster" would have some conflict with Pixar/Disney. You may want to look into that, cuz they are pretty litigious).I look forward to reading it!

  6. The story is coming along slowly, Texas. But business will pick up soon because my job is going on hiatus.
